Your eyes need time. Dark adaptation builds over the first 20 minutes outside, and faint meteors and clusters only show up once it has.
White light sets that back. So does a bright phone screen. One glance can cost you the faintest part of the sky you came out for.
Use dim red light when you need to read a chart. Red preserves adaptation better while still letting you find the next target.
Set up in the first 20 minutes, turn phone brightness down before you go out, and let the sky come to you. The red-light card in the Starter Kit covers the basic tool.
